The philanthropic initiative supports health-related charitable organizations in their pursuit of a better way of health care.
SAN JUAN, PR (1/23/20) -- Abarca, a pharmacy benefit manager (PBM) disrupting the industry with an entirely new approach to technology and business practices, has completed the first year of its Better Care Community Program--a philanthropic initiative designed and wholly executed by employees. Through this program, Abarca awarded four charitable organizations a total of $XX in grants and ongoing volunteer support as they worked to make healthcare awesome in their community.
"As a PBM, Abarca serves millions of people across the US--but our impact on healthcare, families, and communities shouldn't end there," said Jason Borschow, President and CEO of Abarca. "Countless community organizations work to make a difference for patients and members and, through the Better Care Program, Abarca is committed to supporting their efforts."
In 2019, the Better Care Community Program was open to all health-related nonprofits based in Puerto Rico, where Abarca is headquartered. Each submission was evaluated based on potential community impact, alignment with Abarca's core values, and employee volunteer opportunities.
So far, the Better Care Community Program has helped organizations:
Expand efforts to detect early-stage renal diseases and identify at-risk patients to allow early intervention and education.
Host a series of workshops for female high school students across the island to engage them in STEM.
Build and supply an on-site medication dispensary to serve residents at a children's home.
Secure an in-house pediatrician to provide regular medical care for shelter residents and renovate the facility's clinic.
This year, the program will be open to all US-based healthcare nonprofits that have a presence in Florida and Puerto Rico. Abarca will begin accepting applications in the Spring. For more information, visit http://abarcahealth.com/bettercare-en/.
